(194) Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan

Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan (A.k.a Shen Qi Wan = Ba Wei Di Huang Wan = Ba Wei Wan)

1. Ingredients (3rd century formula)
Shu Di ... 24g
Shan Yao ... 12g
Shan Zhu Yu ... 12g
Ze Xie ... 9g
Fu Ling ... 9g
Mu Dan Pi ... 9g
Rou Gui ... 3g
Fu Zi ... 3g

2. General indications
(a) KD Yang deficiency: low back pain, weakness of the lower extremities, a cold sensation in the lower half of the body, tenseness in the lower abdomen. The patient may also be irritable to the point of having difficulty lying down, and will breathe most comfortably while leaning against something; Tongue: pale, swollen   thin, white, and moist coating; Pulse: empty or frail pulse which is submerged and faint at the proximal position
(b) KD Yang deficiency with congested fluids: There is either urinary difficulty with edema or excessive urination, sometimes to the point of incontinence

3. Biomedically-defined disorders: chronic glomerular, interstitial or diffuse nephritis, chronic urethritis, diabetes mellitus, primary hyperaldosteronism, hypothyroidism, neurastenia, arthritis, beriberi, and chronic bronchial asthma.

4. Clinical modifications
(a) For indigestion: add Niu Xi and Che Qian Zi.  They are not digestive (They do not promote digestion, but they can prevent indigestion from Shu Di Huang.)  Also, good for someone who has constipation and urinary difficulty.  If someone has good digestive system, don't add.
(b) For dry cough: add Mai Men Dong 6g, Wu Wei Zi 6g.
(c) For diabetic patient: increase Shu Di Huang to 30-40g.  Shu Di is a very important herb for diabetes.
(d) For hemoptysis: add E Jiao Zhu 4g.  You may add Mai Men Dong 6g, Wu Wei Zi 6g as well.
(e) For daybreak diarrhea: add Tu Si Zi 12g, Bu Gu Zhi 8g, Wu Wei Zi 4g
(f) For man's impotence: add Ba Ji Tian 6g, Rou Cong Rong 6g. 
(g) For heat sensation of the sole of foot: you can still use Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan.  If someone has both palm and sole heat sensation, consider Zhi Gan Cao Tang.
(h) For someone who had more heat: Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is better.  Use without Rou Gui and Fu Zi.  Liu Wi Di Huang Wan is also better for helping with children's development.
(i) For Heat: you can add Zhi Mu 2-4g and Huang Bai 2-4g.

5. Clinical applications
(a) It's a very good formula for diabetes.  Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is one of the most popular formulas for diabetes for Shang Han Lun school.
(b) It's also the best formula for prostatitis in Shang Han Lun formula.
(c) cartaract
(d) Liver cirrhosis.  For Liver cirrhosis, Shu Di Huang can maximize the function of liver cells and tissues.  If the liver cells become cancerous, you can still apply Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan and Shi Quan Da Bu Tang.
(e) For chronic low back pain, losing weight below the waist, leg and knee soreness, Shen Qi Wan is good.
(f) Any kind of chronic disease with fluid dryness, Shen Qi Wan is good.  For example, if a patient suffers from chronic asthma and he or she shows Shen Qi Wan signs and symptoms, use Xiao Qing Long Tang or Mai Men Dong Tang with Shen Qi Wan.  Shen Qi Wan or Shi Quan Da Bu Tang are good tonics for most chronic diseseas.
(g) It is also used for insomnia, anxiety, fear and neurosis.  Usually elderly patients who perform more mental work than physical work are more likely to use Shen Qi Wan.
(h) For chronic low back pain and degenerative arthritis, Shen Qi Wan is used.  For chronic low back pain, you can use Tao He Cheng Qi Tang combined.
